Uber shares edged higher after announcing a strategic collaboration with Nissan and Wayve to develop autonomous taxis for Tokyo's streets. The partnership leverages Japan's revised traffic laws permitting Level 4 autonomous vehicle testing, marking a significant step toward commercialization of self-driving technology.

The pilot program will deploy modified Nissan LEAF vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI Driver system, bookable through Uber's ride-hailing platform. Initial runs will include human safety operators as the system collects critical real-world data. Nissan plans to eventually integrate Wayve's AI into its ProPILOT driver-assistance systems.

This trifecta combines Uber's mobility network, Nissan's manufacturing scale, and Wayve's machine learning expertise—a blueprint for how legacy automakers and tech disruptors might navigate the autonomous future. The modest stock movement suggests investors see this as a long-term play rather than an immediate catalyst.
